Make an AI sprite sheet usable in your game

Image generators draw something that looks like a sprite sheet. Then you try to slice it: the gaps are uneven, the background isn't transparent, and the character drifts from frame to frame. Drop the image here and it comes out as an even grid.

This tool doesn't generate art. It fixes the sheet your generator gave you.

What goes wrong, and what fixes it

Gaps between frames are uneven.

Detect sprites finds each frame by its outline instead of a grid, so the spacing the generator picked does not matter.

The background is a solid colour.

Detection reads the background colour from the edges of the image and makes it transparent in every frame it cuts out.

Every frame is a different size.

After import all frames share one cell size, the size of the largest frame. Force Size sets an exact width and height instead.

The character bobs up and down.

Align the frames to the bottom so the feet land on the same row in every cell. Nudge single frames with the per-sprite offset.

One pose has a smudge or an extra finger.

Right-click the frame and open it in the pixel editor. Fix it there and it saves back to the same cell.

There are too many frames.

Play the loop in the Preview tab, hide frames to test a shorter cycle, and delete the ones that do not earn their place.

The short version

  1. 1Drop the generated image on the editor. The Import image dialog opens.
  2. 2Pick Detect sprites and check the count it reports against what you expect.
  3. 3Import, then align to the bottom and set the cell size.
  4. 4Play the loop, fix or delete the frames that break it, and export.

Ask the generator for this

A few words in the prompt save most of the cleanup:

  • A flat, single-colour background such as plain magenta, so detection can tell it apart from the character.
  • Frames in one row with clear space between them.
  • The same character size in every frame.

Watch for a fake checkerboard. Some generators paint the grey and white squares that mean "transparent" in an editor. Those are real pixels, so detection treats them as part of the sprite. Regenerate with a plain background.
