Pixel art decals and sprites for Celeste mods

Grab a torch, critter or background prop from the gallery, export it as numbered frames, and it shows up in Loenn as an animated decal. No code, and the art is free to use in maps you publish.

Recent decal-sized sheets

Recent small sheets, 32x32 per frame or less. At Celeste's 1x scale, the 8 to 16 pixel ones sit closest to the vanilla decals.

Turn a gallery sheet into a Celeste decal

  1. 1Find a small sheet in the gallery. Celeste art is 1x, so 8 to 32 pixel frames sit right next to the vanilla tiles.
  2. 2Click Open in Editor and trim or recolor it to match your map palette.
  3. 3Export as ZIP. The frames folder holds every frame as its own PNG.
  4. 4Rename them to torch00.png, torch01.png and so on, starting at 00.
  5. 5Put them in Mods/YourMod/Graphics/Atlases/Gameplay/decals/YourMod/. Loenn lists them as one animated decal.

When a Celeste decal misbehaves

The decal shows up but does not animate.
The numbering is off. Frames have to share the name and count up without gaps from 00.
The decal jitters while it plays.
The frames have different sizes. Leave every frame the same size, and do not trim them one by one, so the art stays put.
The art looks huge next to the tiles.
It was drawn for a higher resolution. Celeste tiles are 8x8 at 1x, so shrink it or pick a smaller sheet.
Loenn does not list the decal.
Check the path. It has to be under Graphics/Atlases/Gameplay/decals inside the mod folder, and the mod needs an everest.yaml.

Credit and permissions for GameBanana maps

Plenty of map pages list a credit for every asset. You can do that for gallery art too, but you do not have to: the uploader released it for any use, including maps other people download and remix.

Watch for art lifted from Celeste or other games. If a decal looks like it came from the vanilla atlas, the uploader had no right to share it, so take the original from the game files instead.
